About

This 3-hour training explores how movement and somatic practices can be integrated into mental health therapy to support pregnant and postpartum women. Participants will learn how shifts in the body during the perinatal period influence nervous system regulation, embodiment, and identity, and how movement-based interventions can be used to reduce anxiety, support trauma recovery, and foster connection. Through lecture, clinical discussion, and experiential practice, therapists will gain practical tools for safely and ethically incorporating somatic movement into their work with perinatal clients. Learning Objectives By the end of this training, participants will be able to: Explain the role of the nervous system in perinatal mental health using a polyvagal/somatic lens, including how pregnancy and postpartum uniquely impact regulation, embodiment, and safety. Identify and apply somatic principles—interoception, grounding, orientation, containment, and release—to support pregnant and postpartum clients in therapy. Demonstrate at least three movement-based interventions (e.g., gentle rhythmic swaying, restorative shapes, breath-sound release) that can be safely integrated into mental health sessions for pregnant and postpartum women. Assess clinical appropriateness of movement integration by recognizing contraindications, modifications, and timing for introducing somatic practices with perinatal populations. Integrate movement with verbal processing in ways that expand clients’ capacity for emotional regulation, trauma processing, and identity transition during the perinatal period. Develop take-home micro-practices that empower clients to use safe, accessible movement for nervous system regulation and bonding outside of therapy.
